Thoughts of a middle aged man…..30 September 2012

For one reason or another, and not to put too fine a point on it, today has been a very crappy day. Some days it just does not pay to try to help someone out. I think today is best confined to the annals of history. Tomorrow is another day.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..29 September 2012

Today has been a very long day. We were both up early for a Saturday as we had arranged to visit friends in Clayton Bay which is a one and a half hour drive down south. On the way we stopped at the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre for some nibbles and drinks to take with us, this was out first time at this particular shopping centre and it is actually quite nice.

Back on the road to Clayton Bay and when we arrived we parked our car near the boat ramp and ate the wraps we had bought for lunch, before our first stop at Marg and Mary’s. It was great to catch up, these ladies are very dear to us and we have not seen them for a while. They have a Scotch Terrier called Bonnie who is 17 years old, deaf and blind, but she is loved which is what counts.

Next stop was to see Jan and Harvey where we spent the afternoon and watched the Grand Final, there was also many a joke at Jan’s expense but she can give as good as she gets, it was all in fun. As we were leaving Jan suggested a quick drive around downtown Clayton to see how things have changed.

When we had the business there the lack of water helped to kill our business, now there is so much water and so much bird life, it is simply beautiful. Do I miss it, no, but I do miss the abundance of wildlife. We often had foxes or rabbits, even echidnas in our yard. Would I go back, no way.

I was very happy, along with most of Australia I think, to see the Sydney Swans defeat the Hawthorn Hawks in the AFL Grand Final. Today was what a grand final should be, it was a close game and very exciting. Congratulations to Sydney, but watch out in 2013 for the Adelaide Crows.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..28 September 2012

It is blowing an absolute gale outside, what happened to Spring? When I got home tonight both of our rubbish bins had blown over, after being emptied fortunately.

As I had to work last night Brian and I did the grocery shopping on the way home tonight, and then had Hungry Jacks for dinner. Do yourself a favour and steer clear of Hungry Jacks at Port Adelaide, the worst food I have ever had, I can still taste it.

Did everyone watch the Grand Final Footy Show on Channel 9 last night, not a bad show. The AFL Player Review gets better every year, some of these football players can really dance, such a shame they lip sync, there are probably some good singers amongst them as well. David Rodan from Port Power is a wonderful dancer, who would have thought?

Brian’s brother Ian was in the Rod Laver Arena for the show last night as the company he works for in Western Australia flew him and nine others to Melbourne for a grand final weekend, lucky sod. We spoke to him tonight and he is having a ball.

Tomorrow Brian and I are off to see friends in Clayton Bay for the day and will watch the AFL Grand Final there. I hope the Sydney Swans beat Hawthorn.

Although Clayton Bay has some bittersweet memories we still have good friends there, one in particular Mary is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, and we are quite looking forward to seeing her and her partner Marg. We recently found out that two of the locals, one that we knew quite well and was a regular in the cafe, have passed away. I am sure your friends miss you very much Jan, RIP.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..27 September 2012

Tonight I had a late meeting so it was well after dark when I finally made my way home. It is a fair drive home from Norwood to North Haven, and alone in the car you get to think about things, contemplate  what is happening in your life.
You also get to observe other people driving along, talking on their mobile phones, screaming at their children, bopping to the radio, just chilling out. Then there are the things that really frustrate you, things like women walking out after dark by themselves, do they not read the papers, do they not watch television. It is a dangerous world out there ladies, for god’s sake use some common sense.
Tonight I saw a woman go across Bower Road and walk into a dark public park, how stupid was that. Mothers and fathers, talk to your daughters, do not let them be tomorrow’s news headlines.
On a lighter note , have you ever noticed how the presenters of infomercials seem to scream at you through the television, why can they not speak as normal people do. The last thing I feel like doing after listening to them bellow out from the idiot box is to buy their product.
I have just been reminded that 14 years ago a mate of mine was tragically taken from his young family in a motor vehicle accident. It really does put a whole new perspective on life and makes you appreciate what you have.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..26 September 2012

Today was my day off and I had quite a lazy day. After getting up at 10 am I started the washing and then settled down to read only to be interrupted between loads of washing. As it has been a nice warm day all of the washing has dried and has been folded and put away.

Around lunch time I went to Port Adelaide as I needed some prescriptions, that’s not one but some, I rattle when I walk. The joys of middle age. Anyway the chemist in Port Adelaide does not subsidise the test strips that I need for my diabetes so I had to stop at yet another chemist to buy those.

The second chemist is just around the corner from home and the entire shopping centre is being redeveloped, it is a mess. I was there all of 5 minutes and narrowly avoided 3 collisions in the car park, all the idiots were out in force today.

Back home, more washing, more reading, an hour or so on YouTube looking at video clips about racing pigeons, and before I know it my tummy is rumbling, dinner time. Back to the shops for a limb yiros, a couple of dims sims and some passionfruit yoghurt, and after dinner more reading.

I know, I know, you’re envious of my incredibly exciting lifestyle, you just don’t see how I can keep the pace 🙂

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..25 September 2012

Brian is not in a good way tonight, I have not seen him in so much pain with his back for quite a while. He has no idea why tonight, he has not done anything out of the ordinary, I suppose it is just one of those things.

Brian’s back and Ryan’s hip. My son Ryan has been working away in the Challenger mines but yesterday he had a bit of a fall and has hurt his hip. He limped back into Adelaide today and is off for x-rays tomorrow, fingers crossed he has done no long-term damage.

The entrepreneur in me is a little frustrated at the moment. I thought that by becoming an affiliate of Amazon and setting up Graham’s Goodies sales would come in relatively easily, not the case. I’m just not sure what else to try, I have changed the site numerous times, added retailers, removed retailers, nothing seems to work. I know I am competing against some big retailers out there, but this is Amazon come on, everything they have I have. You know when I first tell people about Graham’s Goodies and the affiliation with Amazon a number of them have said, “Oh I buy from Amazon all the time”. Can I suggest we keep at least some of that money in Australia, check out Graham’s Goodies.

Maybe I should give this site up and find something else I can sell, something unique, but what. If you have any ideas I would love to hear from you. Then again Amazon is more orientated to the USA, so maybe I should find retailers more suited to Australia.

I’ll keep thinking about it for a bit and see what happens Thank you for reading.

Congratulations to Jobe Watson on his Brownlow Medal win. Watching the Brownlow Medal broadcast tonight reminded of something quite funny and very embarrassing that happened to me a number of years ago. I hear you ask what possible link could I have to the Brownlow Medal, read on.

A number of years ago I was in Sydney Airport waiting for a flight to Melbourne, it was the night of one of the AFL awards, NAB Rising Star from memory. Anyway at the airport there were a number of Sydney Swan players also waiting for their flight, Paul Kelly, Tony Lockett, Wayne Schwass, and Michael O’Loughlin.

At the time my third son Blake was an avid Michael O’Loughlin fan, and the good Dad inside me knew that I should get Michael’s autograph for him, however the shy Dad just could not summon up the courage to approach him in the terminal.

As luck would have it Michael sat almost behind me and just across the aisle, very close, so close in fact that I knew if I could get his attention I could ask for his autograph, thus ingratiating myself to Blake. After fumbling around in my briefcase I came up with pen and paper and proceeded to give Michael the eye in an effort to get his attention.

It didn’t take long and Michael saw this idiot giving him the eye so I swallowed hard and asked for his autograph, explaining it was for my son. Ever the gentlemen Michael obliged and I was content and proud in that fact that Blake would be very impressed, and I would definitely be the good Dad.

Imagine my horror when Michael gave me back my pad and pen with an autograph duly signed by none other than Adam Goodes, who proceeded to kill himself laughing. I wish I could have crawled under my seat.

Adam Goodes went on to win an award that night, and I am sure he told that story more than once on the night and had another chuckle at my expense.

The moral of the story, Adam Goodes has had a stellar career and gone on to win two Brownlow Medals, and me, I am still trying to be the good Dad. I wonder if he remembers. As an aside Blake saw the funny side and appreciated my efforts.
