Today has definitely been a better day than yesterday. After sleeping in a little later than I should, what can I say, the boy loves his bed, it was a bit of a rush to get ready as we were due in North Adelaide for a very special afternoon at 12.30.
On the way a pure white pigeon flew directly across out path, so what I hear you say, well firstly it is quite rare to see a pure white pigeon in the wild so to speak, and secondly I only see a white pigeon at a time when I need reaffirmation that my life is on track. Hippy stuff I know but whatever works for me.
We arrived in North Adelaide spot on 12.30 to attend the 90th birthday celebrations of a very special man, John McMenamin. John was married to my maternal grandmother‘s cousin for nearly 70 years prior to her passing nearly two years ago, a grander lady there never was. I don’t think anyone who knew and loved Joyce McMenamin will ever forget her.
Being the son of the daughter of a cousin, well I’m not really sure what that relationship is so we’ll stick with cousin, anyway I have always been close to Joyce and John’s daughters, in particular Sandi. I am very fond of Anne and Vicki as well, I just do not see them as often, however when I do it is like it was yesterday, they are and always have been a very welcoming and loving family.
As we are all family the occasion also gave me the chance to catch up with my mother’s brothers and sister and their partners. We had a lovely afternoon reminiscing and talking about our children and grandchildren, such a shame we do not get together more often, but maybe it is sweeter for just that reason.
I was a bit shocked to see how frail John Mc had become, but then he has not had an easy time of it since Joyce’s passing either physically or emotionally, and the man is 90. Thank you to the McMenamin family for a lovely afternoon, I hope there will be many more.
I can’t sign off without mentioning John’s birthday cake, it was spectacular, a grand piano made of sponge and chocolate, the significance being that John was a music teacher for many years and music is in the McMenamin DNA. Unfortunately as a good diabetic I did not get to taste it, it was such a shame to cut it.
Tomorrow is my day off so another sleep in I think. Thank you for reading.
