Thoughts of a middle aged man…..30 November 2012

Tomorrow is the first day of summer, a little over three weeks until Christmas, four weeks until we welcome 2013. Ugh, I hate Summer, looking forward to Christmas fun with the grandchildren, really looking forward to 2013, both on a personal and a professional level. It will be a big year.

No long weekend for me this weekend, I have to work on Monday. Again I am not complaining, simply sharing. Work is just piling up, another new corporation today. I have two meetings next week, another the next week, an IGM the week after that, and another two as soon as I go back in January. I guess nobody told them that December and January are supposed to be the quiet time.

A good deal of my work now is with new community corporations, I have at least another ten or so coming on early in the New Year, and another retirement village. No rest for the wicked, four days a week here I come.

Will some mothers never learn, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE LEAVE YOUR CHILD LOCKED IN THE CAR WHILE YOU “POP” INTO THE SHOP. It is a fact that mothers are the main  ones at fault here, yet I would be prosecuted if I smashed your window to help your child. Call the police they say, they could be too late. Don’t even get me started on the family pet.

While I am on the subject what is it with women and four-wheel drives. I am forever being cut off by women in their big four-wheel drives who can hardly see over the steering wheel, that think they are safe because they have a big car. They might be safe but what about me? Oh, and by the way, put your makeup on before you leave the house, not whilst driving.

Get down off your soapbox. Thank you for reading.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..29 November 2012

Yet another very busy day at the office with no sign of things slowing down, the silly season is upon us. Just three more weeks till we shut down for the Xmas break, and it looks like I will be going at full pace right to the end, and then hit the ground running in the New Year. At least the time flies, being busy is much more preferable to the alternative so I am not complaining, just sharing.

We do not usually conduct meetings in December but with so many new corporations coming on board I have little choice, I will be having meetings right up to the last week. Fortunately for me most of these will have their 2013 meetings a little earlier.

I had a terrible night’s sleep last night, the warm weather was not conducive to a good sleep, and the evaporative air conditioner struggled a bit. It does not bode well for when Summer really hits, I can only hope for yet another mild summer. Please!

I would love to relocate to a more moderate climate but moving away from my sons and my grandchildren is not an option, if it were we would be in Tasmania. Brian and I have holidayed in Tasmania twice and were completely enchanted by it. Hobart is clearly years behind mainland Australia, but that is what makes it so livable, and the restaurants, absolutely superb. The only food I tried that I did not like was a local delicacy, a scallop pie, truly revolting.

I think it time this middle-aged man took his wrinkly old body to bed, I need my beauty sleep. Thank you for reading.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..28 November 2012

So tell me, what does a guy have to do to get a sleep in on his day off? I was having a peaceful snooze this morning when Number 3 son Blake sent me an SMS asking me to call him when I had the chance, so I thought as he had woken me up I may as well call him straight back. Message bank, only 30 seconds before he had called me and I get message bank, so I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Less than an hour later he called me back as he wanted to know if Brian and I would be interested in contributing to the Xmas present he wanted to give one of his nephews. I explained we had already bought his Xmas present  so he hung up and I rolled over and went back to sleep.

About 30 minutes later I was woken up by someone banging on the front door, so I got up and put on my shorts from yesterday and Brian’s t-shirt as they were the first thing I could grab from the wash basket, and then went downstairs. I opened the front door and there was a Telstra technician enquiring if I had a problem with the phone, which we did, but apparently we weren’t the only ones and someone had beaten me to the punch with and called them first thing. Phone now fixed.

As I was up I stayed up and throughout the day I vacuumed, ironed, and did the washing. I also found some time for YouTube as well as a spot of reading. At about 3.00pm I decided I would have an afternoon nap, but about 30 minutes into my peaceful little nap my daughter-in-law rang, and that as they say in the classics, was that.

Thank you for reading. I am going to bed.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..27 November 2012

Yesterday was my day off and usually when I go in on Tuesday I would be lucky to have a dozen emails, this morning there was forty. It took me most of the morning to clear them but they continued thick and fast all day, and then tonight a marathon Annual General Meeting.

Tomorrow is going to be stinking hot here in Adelaide so I won’t be doing much, off to get a haircut early in the morning then home to the air conditioner. If Brian asks I will be doing the washing and ironing as well. I do have a new book I would like to get into, and probably will, and a little YouTube along the way.

Sales are slowing down again at Graham’s Goodies, what is wrong people? Where are all the people who told me they always buy from Amazon, buy it through me, the same products, the same prices, I just get a little cut from Amazon. Come on, support a local business. I know there are some things that do not ship to Australia but there is a lot that does.

As they say in the classics, “Que Sera, Sera“, every cloud has a silver lining, at least all my expenses are tax-deductible 🙂

Goodnight and thank you for reading.

You just never know what each day is going to bring, it seems that for every step my kids take forward they take another straight back.

Anyway before we get onto that I received an email first thing this morning from my Auntie commenting on one of my recent blogs and how she had enjoyed it. In signing off she mentioned she was looking forward to catching up with me at an upcoming event for my mother, as this event is being organised by my siblings I know nothing about it, apparently I am not part of the family. I could go on but quite honestly they are not worth wasting my time with.

The day continued as planned, I went to see Kane’s children in their school concert, I don’t think they believed I was going as when they saw me they were over the moon. As expected my grandchildren were the pick of the bunch, not that I am at all biased. On the downside the school hall was not well air-conditioned and I have never been in a room with so many overweight people, with so many tattoos and such bad body odour, and so few teeth. I am no oil painting but at least I make an effort.

Later as Brian and I were about to sit down to dinner we got a call from Kane’s wife Kristin to say Kane had been in a car accident, he was OK but his car is a write off, and would we mind picking him up. Would I mind, well as you can imagine all sorts of things were going through my mind so I was in the car in a flash and off to pick him up.

Fortunately Kane is fine, his spirits have taken a battering, not the sort of thing you need anytime but particularly so close to Christmas. Never mind Son you are a fighter, it will all work itself out, the main thing is that you are OK.

My thanks go out to the Universe for keeping Kane safe. Thank you for reading.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..25 November 2012

I had a bit of a fright this morning, I tried to call Dad quite early to thank him for my birthday card and the money he mailed but the phone kept ringing out, and as the same thing had happened yesterday I was a bit worried, so Brian and I headed down there. You may recall that my stepmother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s so that added to my concern.
On arrival I knocked on the front door a number of times, and rang the doorbell. I could hear shuffling inside so I knew someone was home, at that time my main concern was that something had happened to Dad and my stepmother was too frightened and confused to answer the door.
I called out for Dad as well as my stepmother and identified myself so there was a better chance of her opening the front door, which is exactly what happened. She did not look good and she told me Dad had stepped out for a bit, so I told here to stay inside and I would call Dad later, at least I knew they were both OK.
I did call Dad later and Joy had not mentioned my visit. Dad told me that in the last couple of weeks Joy’s condition had deteriorated dramatically, to the point that he has some trouble getting her out of bed. Dad also said she has now been verified as high dependency so I am sorry Dad, I think the nursing home may not be far away, however much it will hurt she cannot be allowed top go on like this, particularly if there is a risk that something could happen to you.
What better way to cheer ourselves up than a little Xmas shopping, although it didn’t cheer up my wallet. The good thing is that we are probably about a third of the way through our Xmas shopping, and if we do a bit more every week it shouldn’t be too much of a burden. Although trying to find something that everyone will like is getting harder every year, especially as the grandchildren are getting older and have very definite ideas about what they want, definite ideas that do not necessarily marry up with our finances.
Later in the afternoon we met an old friend at The Palais for a birthday drink; we were both born on the same day and every year we contact each other for our birthdays, even if we have not spoken since the last one which in invariably the case.
Tomorrow afternoon I am going to a Xmas concert to watch Kane‘s eldest three children, I am looking forward to it as I have not been able to go in previous years. Time now for some beauty sleep. Thank you for reading.

Thoughts of a middle aged man…..24 November 2012

You know what they say about the best laid plans, well today did not go quite as I had planned. We started off on track, I was up early to go to the shops as I had to buy supplies for the family lunch celebrating my birthday, but before long things started to go array.

I was in a good mood, looking forward to a lovely day with my family en route to my first stop at Coles Port Adelaide, on the way I received am SMS from Ryan to tell me his daughter was not well and they would be unable to make lunch. Oh well I thought, you get that, it can’t be helped if Calais is sick and quite rightly Ryan did not want to spread whatever it was she had. I arrived at the shops and cut down slightly on what I bought to cater for the smaller group, and then home to throw it all together, nothing extravagant, just some salads and cold meat.

As usual Blake and his daughter Jade were first on the scene, and Blake bought his new girlfriend Kim to meet the family, she seems a lovely girl and is very good with Jade. Jade gave me a cute card she had made. Blake asked if everyone else was coming so I told him about Ryan, and also that Kristin had called to say they would be late, nothing unusual about that.

Not long after Wade and Gink arrived and then another call from Kristin to say they shouldn’t be much longer. Waiting, waiting, waiting, then another call from Kristin to say we should start without them as they would be really late.

We sat down to a lovely meal, pleasant chat, and then put the food away to wait for Kane, Kristin and their children. Another phone call, this time from Kane, his car had broken down and he was stranded so Brian hopped into his car and went to the rescue courtesy of Mr RAA, only to find his membership had lapsed as he forgot to renew. Dad’s turn, I apologised to my guests and explained I had to leave. As they all know I am there whenever they need me, all understood no questions asked.

I duly arrived and we called the RAA who were quite quick today, diagnosis, the fuel pump was gone, Kane was going nowhere, and naturally it was too late to buy a new fuel pump today. Kane called Kristin to pick him up as he had a trailer to tow as well and I don’t have a towbar, so I left and came home. Kane and Kristin did not make it down, he was stuffed so I am told him to go home and chill out, as tomorrow he has to buy and install a fuel pump.

So much for my birthday lunch, maybe next year. Thank you for reading.
