Today would have been my maternal grandmother‘s birthday, I can’t help but wonder how many of her grandchildren remembered. It has been twenty-one years since your passing but I still miss you. I am sure you would be as proud of my grandchildren, your great-great grandchildren, as I am. Your good lookin’ boy, isn’t so good lookin’ any more, middle age has taken its toll, but I still have my sense of humour.
My grandmother would not recognise the world we live in today, mobile phones, the Internet, DVDs, iPads, CDs, the list goes on. I think we live in exciting and interesting times, and I can’t wait to experience the wonderful new technologies that my grandchildren and great-grandchildren will use as part of their everyday lives.
Look where we have come in just over fifty years, there was no television, refrigerators were quite new, only rich people had a telephone, not everyone even had a car. We went to the drive-in, the City Baths were on King William Street (the site of the Festival Theatre), and our national anthem was God Save The Queen. I remember at the movie theatre we all stood as God Save The Queen was played, and no wedding reception was complete without a toast to the Queen.
In many ways they were better days, we felt safer even if sometimes we weren’t. The rest of the world seemed so far away, now world events are reported in an instant. Facebook is quickly becoming our main form of communication, who talks any more?
Books will soon become a thing of the past as we read on our E-reader, I will miss that, the feeling you get when you turn the page of a real book, there is nothing like it. Oh for the good old days when I was young and my Grandma Allan made the best scones around.
Thank you for reading.
