I had a bit of a fright this morning, I tried to call Dad quite early to thank him for my birthday card and the money he mailed but the phone kept ringing out, and as the same thing had happened yesterday I was a bit worried, so Brian and I headed down there. You may recall that my stepmother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s so that added to my concern.
On arrival I knocked on the front door a number of times, and rang the doorbell. I could hear shuffling inside so I knew someone was home, at that time my main concern was that something had happened to Dad and my stepmother was too frightened and confused to answer the door.
I called out for Dad as well as my stepmother and identified myself so there was a better chance of her opening the front door, which is exactly what happened. She did not look good and she told me Dad had stepped out for a bit, so I told here to stay inside and I would call Dad later, at least I knew they were both OK.
I did call Dad later and Joy had not mentioned my visit. Dad told me that in the last couple of weeks Joy’s condition had deteriorated dramatically, to the point that he has some trouble getting her out of bed. Dad also said she has now been verified as high dependency so I am sorry Dad, I think the nursing home may not be far away, however much it will hurt she cannot be allowed top go on like this, particularly if there is a risk that something could happen to you.
What better way to cheer ourselves up than a little Xmas shopping, although it didn’t cheer up my wallet. The good thing is that we are probably about a third of the way through our Xmas shopping, and if we do a bit more every week it shouldn’t be too much of a burden. Although trying to find something that everyone will like is getting harder every year, especially as the grandchildren are getting older and have very definite ideas about what they want, definite ideas that do not necessarily marry up with our finances.
Later in the afternoon we met an old friend at The Palais for a birthday drink; we were both born on the same day and every year we contact each other for our birthdays, even if we have not spoken since the last one which in invariably the case.
Tomorrow afternoon I am going to a Xmas concert to watch Kane‘s eldest three children, I am looking forward to it as I have not been able to go in previous years. Time now for some beauty sleep. Thank you for reading.
