Thoughts of a middle aged man…..4 January 2013

My mother has defied her doctor yet again, that’s right today she was much better, still very confused but eating and drinking, conscious and talking. Her mind is definitely not quite with us, as when we were talking about her recent visitors she had no idea who Bianca was, nor that Bianca was one of a set of triplets to my sister Carolyn. Bianca and her brothers are Mum’s grandchildren, they will be sixteen next month.

Mum definitely knew who I was as she spoke to me by name and asked how Brian was. I think she is fine when you are there and she can concentrate on you, but once you are not there, out of sight, out of mind.

It appears that Mum’s health takes a particularly unpleasant tumble each time she has a urinary tract infection, and unfortunately these are now coming more frequently and taking a greater toll of her already weakened system each time. As she takes longer to recover each time my guess is that this trend will continue until the times comes when she can no longer fight them. In the meantime she is here and functioning as well as she can, albeit with no quality of life, fortunately for her I don’t think she really realises that.
