Thoughts of a middle aged man…..2 May 2013

Today is Dad’s 78th birthday and what a bad son am I, I forgot to call him. I have tried to get him all week and then on the day of his birthday I forget, and he does not like phone calls at night so I have emailed myself at work to remind me to call him tomorrow.

Dad and I have never been what you would call close but there is definitely a mutual admiration. I know he was proud that Brian and I went into business and gave it a good go as he was a small business owner himself. At least when my time comes I will not be saying what if, as I did try, and Dad admires anyone who does not play safe, anyone who will give it a crack.

Dad does not approve of my lifestyle and although he has met Brian, and I think deep down he does like him and he knows that I am happy, but Dad is from a different generation and we do not hold that against him. Dad has lived his own life on his terms, with little regard for what anyone else thinks, so in his heart he does not blame me for doing my thing.

He is quite chuffed at the fact that he has now lived longer than either of his parents, although he has a long way to go to outlive his own grandparents. Dad is under no illusions that he has lived hard and one day, as with us all, it will catch up with him. Thank you for reading.
